The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) recently announced the recipients of its 2019 research awards which will be presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium® (SABCS®) Dec. 10-14.

Myles Brown, MD, of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center in Boston was named the 2019 AACR Distinguished Lectureship in Breast Cancer Research recipient. Celina Kleer, MD, of the Department of Pathology of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, received the 2019 Outstanding Investigator Award, supported by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).

According to the Dana-Faber Cancer Institute’s website, Brown’s research focuses on elucidating the epigenetic factors underlying the action of steroid hormones. His work has important implications for the treatment of hormone dependent malignancies including breast cancer.

“I am extremely honored to be have been selected to present the AACR Distinguished Lectureship in Breast Cancer Research at the 2019 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium,” Brown said. “During my career I have been extremely fortunate to have had wonderful mentors, colleagues and trainees. I’ve also been privileged to work in the superb environment for research and clinical care provided by the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for more than 30 years. Without the people and the place, nothing I’ve accomplished would have been possible.”

According to the University of Michigan’s website, Kleer is the principal investigator of a National Institute of Health and Department of Defense-funded research laboratory working to understand mechanisms of breast cancer invasion and metastasis, and to develop useful breast tissue-based biomarkers of patient outcome. Her work bridges basic science and clinical application.

“It is a great honor to receive this distinction, and I am grateful for the support and collaboration of my colleagues from the Department of Pathology and Rogel Cancer Center at the University of Michigan,” Kleer said. “I deeply appreciate the dedication of members of my lab who work to discover how breast cancer invades and metastasizes. I am humbled by the recognition of my peers, the AACR, and the BCRF.”

Each will be presenting lectures during #SABCS19. Brown will present, “Essential Genes and Cistromes in Breast Cancer” in Hall 3 at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12. Kleer will present, “Novel Non-Canonical Functions of EZH2 in Triple Negative Breast Cancer” in Hall 3 at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13.
