McDonnell and Esserman to receive Brinker Awards

Susan G. Komen® announced recently the 2020 recipients of the Brinker Awards for Scientific Distinction. They will receive their awards and present lectures at the 2020 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium® (SABCS®) Dec. 8-11.

The Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction in Basic Science will be presented to Donald McDonnell, Ph.D., co-director of the Women’s Cancer Program at the Duke Cancer Institute, Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina.

The Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction in Clinical Research will be presented to Laura Esserman, M.D., M.B.A., professor of surgery and radiology and director of the Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center at the University of California, San Francisco.

The recipients’ lectures will be available on demand beginning Wednesday, Dec. 9.

“Dr. McDonnell’s innovative research has provided significant insights to the biology and pharmacology of the estrogen receptor and led to the development of new drugs for the treatment of hormone-dependent breast cancer,” Komen released in a statement. “His leadership in the field and creative approach to translating laboratory-based discoveries to new cancer drugs will have a lasting impact on breast cancer research and care.”

Komen wrote of Dr. Esserman, “Her groundbreaking work in the I-SPY and I-SPY2 clinical trials have revolutionized our understanding of neoadjuvant clinical trials as biomarker and novel therapeutic testing venues and have led the way for the development of several clinically important agents.”
